Discover our vision
A
Model for 21st Century Highways for America ’s Special
Places
The Eastern Shoreway Alliance is striving
to achieve official designation of the Maryland Eastern Shore
segment of U.S. Rt. 301 as the Eastern Shoreway, a prototype experiential
arterial that reveals and celebrates the local landscape
and provides a model that may be replicated elsewhere.
For most Americans the primary
experience of a place is from the road. Thus by enhancing the
road experience we can create an immediate and compelling experience
that teaches about the distinct character of the surrounding
landscape. This instills greater public confidence and desire
to define a region’s
future, because people are more likely to protect what they enjoy
and appreciate.
If experiential arterials prove successful on
the Eastern Shore, these highways have the potential to create
a new national road network of 21stt Century Highways for
America’s
Special Places that provide motorists with safe, efficient,
and rewarding driving experiences while increasing the appreciation,
and ultimately, the protection of regional landscapes.
The Eastern Shoreway will
- Offer the traveling public an opportunity to
experience and learn about the qualities that make the Eastern
Shore a special place;
- Encourage public and private investment to improve
the visual and environmental qualities of the corridor;
- Ensure the safety of all motorists and those
who maintain the road corridor; and
- Promote regional cooperation, stewardship, and
appropriate economic development
