This proposal was conceived and developed by the Eastern Shoreway Alliance, a group of citizen and professional leaders in landscape conservation and design that began meeting in early 2002. The Alliance is co-chaired by Ellie Altman, Executive Director of the Adkins Arboretum, and Jim Campbell, a retired attorney and resident of Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. The founding Alliance members who conceived the project include Rob Etgen, Executive Director of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, which has been recognized nationally for its land conservation programs; Carol Franklin, co-founder of Andropogon Associates, Ltd., one of the nation’s leading ecological landscape design and planning firms; Tony Hiss, a national advocate for sustainable growth and transportation and author of the award-winning book The Experience of Place; Gail Owings, Kent County Planning Director, a seasoned planner recognized by her peers for successfully promoting land protection for over 20 years; Jodie Shivery, Maryland Department of Transportation, a landscape designer committed at an early age to transforming Maryland’s roadsides through ecological management; and Elizabeth Watson, Executive Director of Eastern Shore Heritage, Inc. and coauthor of Saving the American Countryside.
